What is steel wire mesh?

Steel wire mesh is one of the main elements of the high strength of iron concrete (reinforced concrete) constructions, which are formed by pulling and ribbing the S220 steel by cold drawing method and then being produced by welding in the form of a cage.

Steel wire meshes are mainly manufactured in two types according to the working patterns of the floors,

1. R type wire mesh for building elements working in single stability,

2. Q type wire mesh for building elements working in double stability.

Place of Use 

 As a building material, steel wire mesh is used especially in flooring, curtains, retaining walls, foundations, field concrete, concrete roads, tunnels and galleries, canals and canals.

   However, there are also varieties used for garden fences, balustrades and suspended ceilings. Hot dipped galvanized and polyester painted (coated) can also be provided if desired.
   The yield strength of the steel wire mesh is 2.27 times that of the S220 steel and 1.19 times that of the S420 steel. In other words, when we use steel wire mesh, it is possible to save weight starting from 10% compared to other steels and to save time and money up to 25%.

Project Designing 

The types of steel wire mesh to be used are calculated according to project moments and concrete class. Then drawings of reinforcement plans are made in accordance with the mould plan. In order not to confuse the steel wire mesh, two plans called “lower reinforcement plan” which meets the opening effects and “upper reinforcement plan” which meets the bearing effects are drawn.

In addition, within each reinforcement plan, a “steel wire mesh cutting plan” is made which shows the places and measures required to be cut in accordance with the placement of steel mats and the quantity of iron to be used is added.

Standards and Specifications of Steel Wire Mesh:

In our country, the standard TS4559 is valid in relation to steel wire mesh. For the calculations of reinforced concrete with steel wire mesh, it is necessary to look at TS500 and the regulation on structures in disaster zones. Steel wire mesh can be produced according to DIN488 (German), ASTM A185 (American), BS4483 (British), French and Greek norms. The exposure numbers on the Ministry of Public Works list are 04-305/1, 04-305/2, 23010 and 23011.
